In the context of golf as an ancient pursuit, Wentworth is but a youngster. However, the Club’s rich and varied history belies its tender years. It has attracted the best golfers from around the world, held many of the sport’s premier competitions and made an enormous impact on the game at professional and club level. Its success is a tribute to the talents and vision of several generations of extraordinary men and women.
Were it not for developer Walter George Tarrant and his friend, golf course architect Harry Colt, Wentworth would not even exist. Tarrant saw the development potential of this beautiful site and possessed the skills and the business savvy to turn his visions into reality; meanwhile, Colt was engaged to create two golf courses in this wooded, heathland setting, first the East and three years later the West.
The Wentworth Estate was born, a sanctuary of handsome homes, quite lanes and championship golf courses, all within touching distance of London.
And the Wentworth Club was up and running
