With so many of the Clubs young talents having displayed excellence within the golfing arena, we felt it was only right to highlight some of the accolades achieved in recent months. Our first congratulations goes to Warren Harmston, Club and staff member who won twice in consecutive weeks – the Surrey Amateur Championships on June 6–8 and the Wentworth Club Championship the previous weekend. Warren will now begin a string of competitions over the summer season beginning with the Open qualifier at Effingham Golf Club and will represent Wentworth Club along with Riaz Rattansi in the World Club Championships at Pine Valley in Beijing, China.
There was also cause to celebrate for the Wentworth A team, which included Warren Harmston alongside club members Steve Brown and Billy Fowles, on winning the Club Championship Cup for having the best aggregate scores in the qualifying rounds. Wentworth have now won this for the 4th year in succession, with our B team, Lee Cameron, Riaz Rattansi and Tom Berry as runners up.
Tom Berry, we are pleased to announce was recently chosen to play for the England under 18 Golf Squad representing Wentworth as one of the eleven leading boy golfers in England in his age category. Flying the Wentworth flag for the under 21’s Squad we are proud to have Billy Fowles and for the under 16 Regional Squad golf scholar Curtis Griffiths.
Additionally, rising star Seve Benson has had a run of success from winning last years Tillman trophy on home turf, to claiming his first European Challenge Tour win at the June 08, Piemonte Open in Italy where a three stroke victory ahead of Switzerland’s Raphaёl De Sousa moved him into fifth place in the Rankings. Seve also finished second in the recent Scottish Challenge and now leads the European Challenge Tour Order of Merit.
Of course, these are not the only movers and shakers in the club, many of our juniors and scholars are currently proving themselves out on the course, including Jessica Sewell, who will soon fly out to San Diego to compete in the 4 day Callaway World International Competition after her qualification last year. Scott Bryan is also currently competing out in America and Kenzie McLaren, who is now part of the ladies Hicks team is due to compete for the Hicks trophy this summer.
With the golf season gaining momentum, there is certainly likely to be many more success stories to follow for 2008 and on behalf of the club we would like to wish all our gifted young golfers the best of luck!
